Decline of Investments in Armenia

On January 25, during the visit of RA Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan to Moscow, it was solemnly announced about the establishment of the Armenian-Russian investment club. Thus, Armtimes newspaper has studied the situation with investment projects since that statement.

According to the initiative, Armenian businessmen who live in Russia should make huge investments in Armenia. In that regard, they adopted a statement, expressing willingness “to participate in joint initiatives and business projects with the Government as much as possible”.

According to Armtimes, the official statistics on investments in Armenia in 2017 show a completely different picture.

Thus, according to official data, the amount of Russian investments in Armenia has decreased by 8 times during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, declining to 1.6 billion AMD from the previous 12.7 billion AMD.

Besides, the total amount of foreign investments in Armenia has declined by 7.5 billion AMD in 2017. Moreover, the withdrawal of funds exceeded the inflow of investments during the first quarter of 2017.

Hence, it results that not only do Karen Karapetyan’s statements about 3 billion USD investments to be made not conform to reality, but also the opposite happens. To be more precise, a setback is observed.
