Speaking at the press conference on December 17, Edmon Marukyan, leader of the Bright Armenia Party, noted that the media did not cover Davit Khajakyan’s report on the abuse of power in the municipality.
“Yesterday Davit Khajakyan exposed the official fraud that has taken place in the Municipality. Can you tell me where its coverage is? There is none. …If according to public perception the Member of the Council of Elders can hand over a case of official fraud to the Prosecutor’s Office and it may not be covered because it is of no interest to people, then we’d better leave (Ed. the Council of Elders)” Marukyan said.
Earlier, at a December 16 extraordinary session of the Yerevan Council of Elders, Khajakyan had reported the crime to the Prosecutor General’s Office. He noted that Deputy Mayor Hayk Sargsyan, having no jurisdiction to replace the Mayor and perform the mayor’s exclusive powers, including signing mayor’s resolutions and orders, had signed dozens of such documents.
How the media covered Khajakyan’s statement
The topic was covered by state-run Public Television during the main newscast. The journalist devoted more than half a minute to Khajakyan’s crime report from the 3-minute report on the special session of the city council.
Shant TV commented on Khajakyan’s statement in the framework of Horizon’s main broadcast. Report on the topic was also prepared by the Azatutyun TV news center.
Leading online media outlets have also actively covered the topic, including 1in.am, News.am, Factor.am, Tert.am, 168.am and dozens of other sites.
Thus, Edmon Marukyan’s claim that there is no media coverage of Khajakyan’s reporting of official fraud in the municipality is false.
