On July 9, 2018, the Committee on the Amendments to the Electoral Code adjunct to the Prime Minister held its session in the Government Hall. Secretary of the Committee Daniel Ioannisyan held a discussion with the women’s rights organizations, who presented numerous proposals.
However, the coverage of many websites regarding the discussion include many inaccuracies and this gives rise to misinterpretation.
In particular, the misinterpretation was about 25% participation of women in the parliament.
As it is known, according to the current legislation (the provisions of which will enter into force in a few years) at least 25 percent of the proportional list that has been passed to the parliament should be women.
The media outlets, however, citing Ionnisyan, wrote the following: “The government proposes to ensure 25% of women’s participation in the Parliament”, which does not correspond to the reality.
Ionnisyan has already denied these words attributed to him. Both during the discussion and after it, Ionnissyan noted that the Government is still holding discussions and currently there is no decision on this issue.
