Armenia’s showed decline in the Corruption Perception Index contrary to the prediction of the Government of Armenia

16:15, 31 Jan, 2023

The international non-governmental organization Transparency International has published the 2022 report on the perception of corruption according to which Armenia has worsened its position compared to 2021.

Thus, according to the index, Armenia lost 3 points compared to the previous index of 2021 and came in 63rd place with 46 points, instead of 58th last year.

The score is given on a scale of 100, the higher the score, the more positive the indicator is. As in the previous report, in the 2022 report also, the study was conducted among 180 countries of the world.

Fact Investigation Platform compared the RA government’s prediction regarding the Corruption Perception Index in 2022 and found out that the executive body could not achieve its own prediction.

Thus, according to Annex 2 of the Anti-corruption Strategy of RA and its Action Plan for 2019-2022, RA should have had 55 points in 2022 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index.

Meanwhile, in the 2022 index, Armenia not only did not meet the defined threshold of 55 points, but also dropped points collecting 46 points in 2022 compared to 49 points in 2021.

Moreover, it is noteworthy that in 2021, the year following the Artsakh war marked by internal political instability and restrictions due to COVID-19, Armenia managed to maintain its position in the ranking with 49 points.

Thus, contrary to the prediction set in the Anti-corruption Strategy of the RA Government, in 2022 RA not only did not improve, but also worsened its position in the Corruption Perception Index.
